Vincent Rono and Sandra Chebet triumph in Safaricom Kericho 10km road race  

70-year-old Elizabeth Cheboin, who finished the 10 kilometres Safaricom Kericho road race in 75 minutes in the special category.




The Lille Half Marathon Champion, Vincent Rono and  World Youth 3,000m Silver Medalist, Sandra Chebet, triumphed in the Safaricom Kericho 10km road race held in Kericho town on Saturday.   Rono, 27, who won in the Lille Half marathon held in France last month, clocked 29:38.5, second place was Emmanuel Bor 29:40.8 and in third place Geoffrey Koech clocking in 29:51.7.   Safaricom sponsored the event held at Kericho’s Moi garden and 300 contesters participated in the race.

Winners in all the categories pocketed Sh 40,000 as prize money and Sh 30,000 and Sh 20,000 for second and third finishers.   Londiani based World Youth 3,000m Silver Medalist, Sandra Chebet, won the women category clocking 33:02.07.   In second place was Chebet’s training partner, Evaline Chirchir, and Eva Cherono took third place in 33:04.9 and 33:02.9 respectively.   70-year-old Elizabeth Cheboin finished the race in 75 minutes winning in the special category.   The elated granny said she was happy to have taken part in the event, adding that this was part of her exercise.

Addressing the press after the event, Race Organizer, Kibet Biwott, called for more support from the County Government of Kericho.   Those who won in the men’s category include   Vincent Rono (29:38.5), Emmanuel Bor (29:40.8) and Geoffrey Koech (29:51.7).  Others were Peter Kipkemei (30:03.1) and Philip Langat (30:12.1).   The winners in the women’s category were Sandra Chebet (33:02.7),  Evaline Chirchir (33:02.9), Eva Cherono (33:04.9), Joan Chekemoi (34:02.8), and Lilian Jelagat (34:06.1).
