Storms destroy property in Homa Bay

Property of unknown value was on Thursday evening destroyed by a storm which accompanied a heavy downpour in Homa Bay County.

The property was destroyed when the strong winds blew off roofs of houses at  Amoyo trading centre, West Kanyadoto Location in Ndhiwa Sub-County.

The strong winds blew off roofs of seven buildings at the trading centre.

The buildings were used as kiosks for selling various items but buildings in two homes were also destroyed.

According to one of the storm victims who gave his name as Lawrence Opany, the trail of destruction led to heavy losses but no casualty was reported.

“All property that was inside the buildings got destroyed. This is a serious economic setback for us,” said Opany.

The storm further caused havoc at Amoyo Dispensary which serves a large population in Kanyadato ward.

“Patients have been getting attended to in tents after the dispensary roof was destroyed about six months ago. But it is unfortunate the wind blew off the tents and destroyed medical equipment which were inside,” said Atieno Ooko, the dispensary committee Chairman.

They called on the Homa Bay County Government disaster management department to intervene in mitigating the impact of the storms.

The  Ndhiwa OCPD, Nixon Makokha confirmed that nobody was injured during the incident.

“I have not received any reports on injuries or loss of life during the incident,” said Makokha.
