Kitui Deputy Governor launches cotton seeds distribution in Mwingi North
Kitui Deputy Governor Dr Wathe Nzau has urged farmers in Kitui County to plant cotton alongside green grams to boost food security and raise incomes.
Dr Wathe said the County Government of Kitui would assist the residents to exploit local resources to raise incomes and reduce poverty levels.
He said the county government would also assist in sourcing market for the two crops noting that green grams and cotton would not fetch less than Sh, 100 and Sh.52 per kilogramme respectively.
He was speaking Thursday when he launched cotton seeds distribution in Tseikuru town, Maseki and Ngomeni in Mwingi North Sub County.
The initiative is jointly funded through a partnership between the County Government of Kitui, Meru and Kitui Ginneries and the Directorate of Fibre Crops.
He said Meru Ginneries has delivered 6.3 metric tonnes of certified cotton seeds. At least 500kg were distributed in Tseikuru Ward alone.
Meru Ginneries Managing Director Mr. Alex Kieme said the company would supply crop chemicals and train farmers on crop husbandry.
Mr. Kieme noted that the firm would pay cash upon delivery of the harvest and hailed the county government for negotiating cotton buying price from Sh42 to Sh52.
Cotton farmers, Mulu Maliku, Kathuru Kimanzi, MusembeiTuti, Esther Maingi and Michael Kiteme praised the initiative to revive cotton farming in the county.
