Two KDF soldiers killed seven others injured in Mandera shootout
Two KDF soldiers were on Wednesday evening killed in a Mandera shootout with Rapid Border Patrol Unit (RBPU) police along the Somalia border.
The 6pm shootout happened as the soldiers constructing the Kenya/Somalia border security wall were heading to the border from Nairobi.
Three RBPU police officers were also injured in the incident near the Sheikh Baruk RBPU camp in Lafey Sub County.
The Lafey Deputy County Commissioner (DCC), Eric Oronyi told KNA on phone the soldiers confused the police unit with Al Shabaab and opened fire resulting in a shootout.
The injured were treated at the Lafey sub county hospital before being flown to Nairobi for specialized treatment.
The area is a security operation zone where the Somalia based al Shabaab terrorist group attack private and passenger vehicles plying the Mandera- Wajir route.
In 2014 some 28 teachers were killed along the same road with area governor, Ali Roba twice being a victim of a shootout that left five of his security officers dead.
