Concerns raised over decline in uptake of Education loans

The  Busia County Director of Vocational Training, Manasi  Echaune has expressed concern over the decline in the number of students registering applications for Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).

Speaking to the press in Busia on Wednesday, Echaune said approximately 400 students have applied for the funds compared to 1,000 last year.

“It is wrong for our students to keep complaining and fail to apply for the loan which is meant for them,” he said adding that the Department had set aside shs. 37 million for disbursement to applicants.

He explained that adverts had been placed on the local media as well as local administration yet very minimal response was being realized.

The official encouraged those who would have downloaded the forms and registered with HELB to submit them by end of business  on Thursday.

Echaune further said that 11,000 students benefitted from Sh.90m Bursary allocation in the financial year 2016-2017.
