Raila vows ODM will recapture Ugenya parliamentary seat

Former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga has ordered top Orange Democratic Movement party leadership to pitch camp in Ugenya constituency and ensure that the party recaptures the seat it lost following nullification by the high court.

The ODM leader said the party cannot afford to lose the seat to its rivals given its history in the struggle for multi-party politics in the country.

Odinga said that the constituency was a cradle for the opposition politics and had played a great role on the country’s politics and that the party could not afford to lose the seat to rivals.

He was speaking at Nyawara village in Ugenya constituency yesterday during the burial of the late David Orengo, an uncle to Siaya senator, James Orengo.

The National Super Alliance co-principal said the ODM leadership will pitch tent in the constituency and ensure that Chris Karan, whose election was nullified last week, recaptures the seat.

The Kisumu high court last week nullified Karan’s election citing malpractices, among them character assassination of the petitioner, former MP, David Ochieng’s name through propaganda that he was a Jubilee candidate and that he was behind the murder of former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission employee, Chris Msando who hailed from the constituency.

Raila’s orders were immediately taken by the local leaders, among them Ugunja legislator, OpiyoWandayi and Siaya governor, Cornel Rasanga who said they will use the time and resources to ensure that the party candidate emerges the winner.

Rasanga said he will bankroll the by election campaigns and challenged Ochieng to drop his bid in favour of Karan.

Ugunja MP who is also the ODM director of political affairs said the party was keen on bagging Wajir West, Homa Bay and Lamu governorship posts as well as Ugenya constituency.

Siaya senator, James Orengo maintained that the petitioner,Ochieng, still had the Jubilee mole tag so long as he continues shying away from sharing platforms with Raila Odinga.

He wondered why Ochieng failed to attend the burial of his uncle if indeed he was not a Jubilee mole.

Last week Ochieng said the court had absolved him from the accusations after it ruled as illegal, the use of propaganda to brand opponents as members of parties that they do not belong to.

Ochieng said that he was prepared to face the ODM challenge and exuded confidence of emerging victorious, adding that Ugenya electorate had matured and will not be swayed by party politics.
