Structures constructed on road reserves demolished

The  Turkana  County Government  on Friday demolished business premises that were said to have been constructed on road reserves in Lodwar.

The ministry of lands officials led the exercise that saw shops and hotels brought down during the operation, while security officers including, national police reservists, guarded the officials during the exercise.

“We are committed to the proper planning of the town,” Governor Josphat Nanok said in the past before the demolition started.

Ministry of Lands, Energy, Housing and Urban areas Management CEC, Esther  Lokwei has also vowed to continue with the exercise, and noted that scores of buildings which had been earmarked for demolition have been brought down and more are waiting to be demolished.

In the past, county residents have expressed concerns over congestion in Lodwar town, a situation that made it impossible for firefighting trucks to access some buildings in event of fire outbreak.

“I support the demolition exercise because it will help in planning of the town and open up areas that were previously inaccessible,” said John Etyang.

The opening up of the town is also said to be helping reduce crime rate in the town by denying criminals their hideouts.
