Alarm as rape and defilement cases rise

The  Security  Committee in Malindi Sub County has appealed to Courts to give severe sentences to men found guilty of rape and defilement in the area following the increase of such cases.

The Malindi Sub County Deputy County Commissioner (DCC), Karung’o Kamau said by giving light sentences, the Courts had contributed to the increase of those cases.

Kamau was speaking to the press in his office on Tuesday after chairing the security committee meeting.

Mr. Kamau said about 17 rape and defilement cases were being reported at Malindi district hospital each month hence, the need for serious action to be taken against the culprits.

The DCC said, the security committee would ensure that security is beefed up in all parts of the Sub County during Ramadhan season being observed by the Muslims in the area.

He said the committee had taken the security matter seriously following the alert reported by the police that Al shabaab attacks could be experienced during Ramadhani period.
