MP abandons patient after taking her to hospital

A patient who was assisted to pay part of his hospital bill by an MP is detained at the Mariakani Sub County Hospital in Kaloleni Sub County over non-payment of a hospital bill of sh.9,700.

The patient, Ms Mwenda Karisa who was discharged a week ago has not been able to leave the hospital until she clears the bill.

She is alleged to be suffering from cervical cancer.

Ms Karisa was taken to the hospital by Kaloleni MP, Paul Katana on June 25, 2018 who made part payment of sh.10, 000 but efforts to get a blood donation did not succeed causing the hospital to perform an operation on her.

Efforts to get comments from the hospital superintendent did not bear fruit but sources revealed that the patient was to be discharged on July 20th 2018 upon payment of the remaining balance of sh.9,700.

“We are waiting for either the husband or the MP who brought her here to come and make pay the bill. We cannot release her without authority from our bosses”, the sources added.

According to her husband, Karisa Kahindi, he cannot raise the bill and that there were no consultations with his wife before she was taken to hospital as she has been living with her parents for the past two years.

“ I am willing to support but due to financial constraints and having a second wife with several children, I cannot”, he said.

Efforts to get in touch with Katana were fruitless for the past one week.

His personal assistant said his boss has been unwell.
