Teacher finally charged with defilement after hiding for 2 years
A teacher who has been on the run since 2016 was arraigned in a Voi court on Thursday, after a dramatic arrest for defiling a 6 year old pupil.
Erastus Malandi appeared before Resident Magistrate, Anne Karimi and pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The teacher also faced an alternative charge of engaging in an indecent act with a minor.
He was released on Sh.100, 000 cash bail or Sh.200, 000 bond with surety of a similar amount.
According to the charge sheet, the suspect was accused of having defiled the minor on 23rd October, 2016 at Sagalla village in Voi sub-county. The victim was aged six then.
Malandi, a teacher at a local primary school at that time, went underground for fear of arrest after the victim’s family reported the matter to the police.
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) would later interdict him for desertion of duty.
His arrest on Wednesday afternoon was characterized by drama as he attempted to flee by jumping over a fence after police showed up at a school where he was attending a disciplinary hearing.
The efforts were however thwarted after members of public at Mwakingali, backed by Sagalla chief and Administration Police officers gave a spirited chase and finally caught him.
The suspect had recently returned from his self-imposed exile on the second term of 2018 and applied to TSC to reinstate him back to his job.
He would later be transferred to a primary school in Mwatate under unclear circumstances.
It was while at the new school that defilement allegations against him were revisited and an internal probe on his conduct was launched.
The case will be mentioned on October 3.
