County government launches milk cooling plants
The Bomet county government on Saturday commissioned 19 milk cooling plants valued at shillings one hundred million in all the five constituencies.
Addressing farmers at Chesoen cooling plant in Bomet central, the county Agri-Business executive, Alex Kirui said there was an increase of milk production from 50 million litres annually two years ago to 124 million litres last year occasioning construction of the plants.
He said the tea and horticultural growing wards will be considered next financial year through construction of cooling houses for the preservation of their produce.
He noted that the coolers will assist farmers negotiate for better prices hence avoiding unscrupulous processors out to dictate to farmers.
The official advised farmers to effectively maintain the facilities since the county government will not employ technicians on their behalf.
He said plans are underway to construct a shs.500 million milk processing factory through the multi-purpose cooperative societies. “The county produces over 70,000 litres of milk daily which will sustain the running of the factory throughout the year,” he said.
In Bomet East the cooling plants are at Merigi, Sugutek, and Longisa, in Sotik sub-county Kamungei, Sorojat, Kipsonoi, Chepkalwal, shiongiroi, and Ndanai.
In Chepalungu sub county we have Itembe, Sigor, Kaboson, Elbutyo, Kapkesosio, Chebortuyet and Labotyet cooling plants.
