Friends and family pay tribute to late finance Minister David Mwiraria

The funeral service for the late Former finance Minister  David Marete Mwiraria was held today  at the All Saints Cathedral, where he was eulogized as a great statesman who helped Kenya’s economy grow.   Speaking during the service, former head of public service Ambassador Francis Muthaura said Mwiraria helped in packaging economic strategies which put Kenya on the path to economic success by moving GDP from less than one percent to seven percent in 2007 during his tenure as the Finance Minister.   Jubilee Party Secretary General and former information Minister Raphael Tuju said that the political mob lynched the late Mwiraria’s career by associating him with the Anglo leasing scandal that led to his resignation.   Tuju said  Kenyans  should   remain peaceful during this electioneering period  adding  violence will not solve any problems.   Former Kenya Airports Authority Managing Director George Muhoho, eulogized Mwiraria as lover of education both at home where he opened 34 public schools and was among those who introduced the 8.4.4 system in Kenya.   Former statehouse comptroller Materi Keriri said that the Anglo Leasing scandal killed the late Mwiraria’s political career and the courts took long to give its verdict which led to Mwiraria’s resignation as the Finance Minister.   The late Mwiraria in 2002 acted as the deputy leader of the opposition and shadow Minister of Finance in 2002 before being appointed Minister of Finance in 2003.   Mwiaraia was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2001 and has been battling the illness until his demise on April 13, 2017.   The late Mwiraria will be buried this Saturday at his Kiringa home in Meru County.   By Caroline Kariuki  and Isabel Wairimu
