Mandera police engage Shabaab in a serious gun battle
Mandera Police have this morning engaged Al Shabaab militants in a serious gun battle repulsing them back to the neighbouring town of Bulla Hawa in Somalia.
The militants were said to be pursuing Somalia National Army (SNA) who have since Sunday night camped in Mandera town after al Shabaab seized Bulla Hawa.
Mandera County Commissioner (CC), Fredrick Shisia on Monday morning said Kenya security agents were following the incident closely.
A combination of Kenya police and KDF are currently fighting the Shabaab along the common border as they have hoisted their black flag in Bulla Hawa.
By the time of going to press, heavy gunfire and bombs continued renting the air with Mandera residents remaining in doors as fighting continued in Somalia barely 2kms from Mandera town.
Shisia had told KNA that the current unrest in Mandera town is a spillover from Somalia.
“Our forces are monitoring the situation closely as we prevent more spill over by the militants to Kenya but we have managed to contain the situation,” said Shisia.
There is a heavy police presence in Mandera town.
Several major attacks executed by the militants in Mandera town have been planned in Bulla Hawa as the militants cross over through the border.
