Police in Voi launch manhunt for highway robbers
A massive manhunt has been launched in Voi sub-county after a gang of armed highway robbers hijacked a trailer on Sunday night.
The four robbers were said to be heavily armed and were targeting motorists day and night along the busy Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.
The Sunday night incident occurred at Maungu area when the driver had stopped to check on water levels of his engine.
The four pounced on the driver from the bushes, tied him up and robbed him of his personal effects and Shs. 2000 after which they attempted to drive off the truck in vain.
Speaking to KNA on Monday, County Police Commander, Fred Ochieng said the driver was ferrying wheat to Nairobi when he stopped to check on his truck.
“The driver was rescued by other truck drivers who rushed him to Moi County referral hospital where he was treated,” he said.
The police boss said patrols had been intensified along the highway and urged the truck drivers not to make random stops along the highway.
He further warned the truckers against picking passengers along the highway, stating that some might be thieves masquerading as passengers.
