Workers to down their tools
Trans Nzoia county government workers have given their employer one week notice to pay their June salary or down their tools.
Speaking to the press in Kitale on Monday, Kenya county government workers union Trans Nzoia branch, Eliud Nabiiba gave Governor Patrick Khaemba up to 19th July to release the June salary or face industrial action.
KMPDU Trans Nzoia Branch Chairman, Dr. David Wesaya also confirmed that the doctors will join other workers in downing their tools if their salaries will not have been paid by end of the week.
Wesaya also asked the county government to address once and for erratic payment of workers’ salaries, adding that workers salaries should be on their accounts by 5th of every month.
He however allayed fears that the demand for their June salaries are politically instigated saying as workers, they have a right to demand for what is rightfully theirs.
“This is a legitimate course we are pursuing and no one is pushing us…………we also want our employer to remit the statutory and non statutory deductions to relevant institutions on time to avoid penalties, especially in banks”, he said.
However the County Secretary, Pius Munialo confirmed that they had not paid the workers’ salaries, but urged them to be patient as the employer was working to see to it that they are paid soon.
Munialo attributed the delay in salary payment to unavoidable circumstances which he did not disclose.
Nabiiba however, attributed delay in payment of workers’ salaries to corruption, and asked relevant bodies to investigate misuse of the funds among some members of staff.
